Books: Heat by Bill Buford: "Bill Buford's book 'Heat' last month. The biggest surprise was, upon finishing the book, realizing that 'Heat' is hands down one of the best books on food that I've read in recent years." I read that book in record time, it has a few lengthy chapters, but all in all it was a very good read. The guy is passionate and he went the extra mile to research, and in the end it wasn't work anymore it was love of cooking and knowing how to prepare food. His depiction of Batali and White makes them bigger than life.

are you going to call it like it is?
davidmaister.com > Passion, People and Principles > Client Politics: "As a consultant, my clients often tell me they want help in developing strategies and systems to move the company forward on its declared goals. But what isn’t said is that, all too often, different groups within this company are at odds with each other and I am a tactic or a weapon in this battle (or worse, a war.) " This post from David Maister, the man who understands professional services firm like few do has a good and bad side. First the good - it lays out situations that one can often run into in various mandates. Second the bad - well I guess I have to read the book(s) to figure the answers how to best navigate the politics, and various agendas at play. There is one thing I remember from one of his books, the trusted advisor. In one of the chapters he explains the four qualities of a good trusted advisor, one of them is one's self orientation. To become a trusted advisor, one has to be able to call it like it is - whether or not it brings one more revenue, ie we have to call it like it is, and our clients will appreciate us for it - strengthening the relationship even more.

ImaSight unveils high-quality, low-cost digital X-ray sensor
ImaSight unveils high-quality, low-cost digital X-ray sensor: "In addition, the ImaSight4600 incorporates an industry-leading graphical user interface developed in conjunction with Ottawa-based Macadamian Technologies Inc." from the Sometimes-it's ok-to-tune-your-own-horn department. Over the years often we've found ourselves not able to talk about what we did because of the stigma attached to outsourcing. Here our client went straight ahead and mentioned us in their press release- this is great! it speaks of the industry evolving and the need for company to have a solid R&D supply chain made to deliver the value and great products.

Freedom of information
I didn't realize the concept of freedom of information had been around for so long. In 1766 the Finns thought it was necessary to citizens to have access to government information etc... This is pretty impressive.

Yu-Gi-oh!
After so many years it looks like this game is still the craze at school. Ludovic, my son, is all over it. He is still young, too young to play the real game, but card trading is king at school, so Santa brought him Yu-Gi-Oh cards for Christmas. I tried making sense of the 32pages manual that comes with the cards to learn the game, I gave up, and resorted to google. If you want to learn to play have fun with the link above. It's complicated, and I'd much rather play battleships!
